“Telling your father how much you liked his forwards does not count.”
“As you can tell, I’m busy.”
“I know you are, but I still want to know how you’re doing. It’s one of those unfortunate side effects of carrying you in my womb for nine months.”
Nate doesn’t tell her he would like to know the answer to that question too. He nods at his plate and thinks of grade school when she asks if he’s made any friends. He hadn’t realized the answer is no.
“A few,” he starts. “There are a lot of nice people, but I’m just not close to anyone yet.”
“But you do go places with them? You have fun on the weekends?”
He thinks about last Friday night when Gloria made hot dogs and he was shocked to discover she actively cheered for the Celtics and Saturday when he and Brad IMed for hours before he fell asleep in front of his computer.
“Of course,” he says.

"Uh, Mr Fick?" Rolling Stone is hovering.
"Christ, what now," Nate says, his head in his hands. "Yes. What."
"There's some fighting between pro-integration and pro-independence groups near the Pancasila statue, you might like to warn the convoys coming through. Also, I was walking past the market and saw these for sale," Rolling Stone says, all in a rush, and hefts a bag of rice onto Nate's desk so that he can see the light blue WFP logo.
"Christ," Nate says again, and calls in Captain America. "What the fuck, Dave."
Captain America looks at the bag. "I think the IDPs are selling them," he says earnestly. "I think it's a sign of a recovering market economy."
Nate has to resist the urge to scream. "The IDPs have no food," he grits outs slowly, like he's speaking to a child. "Why would they sell their food for money, just so they can buy more food?"
Captain America just gives him a glassy-eyed stare and shrugs.

AU. Нейт-центрик, Брэд/Нейт в самом конце. Сначала читается как «что сняло бы HBO, если бы не было Ирака», потом как безнадежный ЮСТ из-за тупежа Нейта. Замечательный Поук. Мало Брэда (только глазами Нейта), несколько действительно запоминающихся сцен.

Не собиралась читать, АУшка же, но первая фраза покорила, и дальше не отпускало до самого конца. Единственный спойлер есть в шапке, так что сама виновата
AU. Постапокалиптика, можно читать как J2 или оридж про подростков. Замечательный Док. И Поук с семьей.
